God’s Blueprint for His House

Sunday’s sermon reminded us that God is not only our Father; He is also the Architect and Builder of His House. Through Christ, we are no longer strangers or outsiders. We are members of God’s family, built together into a dwelling place for His Spirit. We are not renters, our name is on the deed!
Let’s look closer at what this blueprint reveals for us, outlined in Ephesians 2:19-22.
1. From Strangers to Family
Paul reminds us in verse 19 that we are “no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of His household.” In Christ, we belong. We are adopted into a spiritual family where every person matters. I loved that Pastor Joey said “Adoption isn’t probationary; it’s permanent.”
This truth shapes how we view the church… not as a place we attend, but as a family we participate in. God’s house is marked by unity, care, and love for one another.
2. Built on a Strong Foundation
Every house needs a solid foundation. Verse 20 points us to the apostles and prophets, with Christ Himself as the cornerstone. Without Him, the structure cannot stand.
The cornerstone sets the alignment for the rest of the building. In the same way, Jesus sets the direction for our lives. His Word is the foundation we return to when we need guidance, correction, and strength. Pastor Joey told a story yesterday of removing walls in a home to make more room, without checking to see if the walls were loadbearing! It could have been a disaster, or even lead to casualties - and some of us are walking around ignoring God’s blueprint that tells us exactly which parts of our lives are loadbearing. It’s not something we get to choose to ignore… in fact, the consequences of neglecting his blueprint can be fatal.
3. Growing Into a Holy Temple
God’s blueprint doesn’t stop at the foundation. Verses 21–22 show that “in Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.” God is actively building us: shaping us into a people who reflect His presence in the world.
This means our growth is ongoing. We are being fitted together, learning to live in step with the Spirit, and becoming a place where God’s presence is known.
Living Out the Blueprint
A good builder follows the blueprint carefully. In the same way, God invites us to evaluate whether our lives align with His design. Are our homes, relationships, and daily rhythms reflecting the unity, foundation, and holiness He desires?
As members of His household, we’re called not just to hear this truth, but to live it out in ways that reveal Christ to others.
Questions to reflect on this week:
Where in your life do you feel most connected to God’s family, and where do you feel like a “stranger”?
How does remembering Christ as the cornerstone encourage you in seasons of uncertainty or weakness?
In what ways can you help “build up” others in God’s house this week?
What habits or patterns in your home may need to shift to better reflect God’s blueprint?
How can you invite God’s presence more intentionally into your daily life?
