Suiting Up with the Armor of God

August 25, 2025 | by Erin Long

Yesterday, Pastor Joey walked us through Ephesians 6:10–20, where Paul reminds believers to “put on the full armor of God.” Just like a football player wouldn’t dare step onto the field without a helmet and pads, we as Christians are called to suit up daily for the spiritual battles we face. The armor of God equips us to stand strong, not in our own strength, but in the power of the Lord.

Let’s walk through each piece of armor together.

The Belt of Truth

A football player starts with the basics, strapping on gear that holds everything together. The belt of truth does the same for us. Truth anchors us when the enemy tries to confuse or deceive. God’s Word is truth, and when we fasten it around us, it keeps us from being pulled apart by lies.

Takeaway: Start your day by reminding yourself of what God says is true, not what the world says.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

Just as pads protect a player’s chest from heavy hits, righteousness guards our hearts. Through Christ, we’ve been made right with God, and by living in obedience, we keep our hearts shielded from the enemy’s attacks.

Takeaway: Protect your heart today by choosing what is right, even in small decisions.

The Shoes of Peace

No athlete runs onto the field barefoot. Shoes give stability and traction. In the same way, the gospel of peace helps us stand firm and move forward. When life feels shaky, God’s peace gives us solid ground.

Takeaway: Walk in peace by trusting God’s promises instead of being driven by fear or worry.

The Shield of Faith

When a football player braces for impact, his pads and helmet deflect the force. Our faith works like a shield, blocking the fiery darts of doubt, fear, and temptation. Faith doesn’t mean we never face hits, it means we trust God to protect us through them.

Takeaway: When doubts come, lift your shield by declaring your faith in God’s power and goodness.

The Helmet of Salvation

A helmet is non-negotiable for an athlete charging into contact. Without it, the consequences are devastating. The helmet of salvation protects our minds: our thoughts, our perspective, our hope. Knowing we belong to Christ gives us confidence no attack can steal.

Takeaway: When negative or defeating thoughts creep in, remember your salvation and who you are in Christ.

The Sword of the Spirit

Every player carries gear for defense, but the sword is unique… it’s our only offensive weapon. The Word of God, empowered by the Spirit, is how we push back against the enemy. Jesus Himself used Scripture when tempted in the wilderness. So can we.

Takeaway: Don’t just read the Word. Speak it, pray it, and use it to push back against temptation.

Just like no athlete would dream of stepping into the game without gear, we shouldn’t face a day without God’s armor. The battle is real, but so is the victory we have in Christ. Let’s make it a habit to suit up daily, trusting God to strengthen and protect us.

Questions to reflect on this week:

  1. Which piece of God’s armor do you most need to strengthen in your life right now?

  2. How can you “suit up” each morning in a practical way?

  3. What lies or doubts has the enemy tried to throw at you recently, and how can truth or faith shield you?

  4. How might you use God’s Word this week as an offensive weapon, not just for defense?

  5. Who in your life could you encourage to “suit up” alongside you?
