When God Says “Wait”: How Waiting Leads to Growth

Updated: Jul 16

Nobody loves waiting. Whether it’s in traffic, in line, or in life, waiting can feel like a frustrating delay. But in God’s Word, we see a different perspective, one where waiting is not a punishment, but part of His plan to grow us into who we’re meant to be.

Waiting isn’t a waste. It’s a workshop.

Let’s look at four people in Scripture who learned this firsthand.

Joseph: Waiting in the Dark

God gave Joseph big dreams, but his journey to get there was filled with betrayal, slavery, and prison. He waited over 13 years before stepping into the leadership role God had promised.

“The Lord was with Joseph…” – Genesis 39:2 (ESV)

Even in the lowest places, God was working. Joseph’s waiting wasn’t pointless, it was preparing him to lead with wisdom, compassion, and strength.

David: Waiting in Obscurity

David was anointed king as a teen, but he didn’t wear the crown until age 30. During those years, he ran for his life, lived in caves, and served a king who wanted him dead.

“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” – Psalm 27:14 (ESV)

God used the waiting to shape David into a king with a shepherd’s heart. His private battles became preparation for public leadership.

Hannah: Waiting in Pain

Hannah longed for a child. Year after year, she was met with disappointment and grief. But she didn’t give up, she cried out to God with raw, honest prayer.

“Then Hannah prayed and said, ‘My heart exults in the Lord…’” – 1 Samuel 2:1 (ESV)

Her waiting deepened her faith, and God gave her a son, Samuel, who would become one of Israel’s greatest prophets.

Sarai (Sarah): Waiting on a Promise

Sarai was promised a child, but 25 years passed before she held her baby boy. Along the way, she doubted, laughed, and tried to take control… but God was faithful.

“She considered him faithful who had promised.” – Hebrews 11:11 (ESV)

Even in her weakness, God fulfilled His word. Her waiting became part of the testimony of His grace.

So, What About Us?

We all have seasons of waiting: for answers, for healing, for doors to open, or prayers to be answered. It’s easy to believe that nothing is happening, but God is always working behind the scenes.

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength…” – Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

In the waiting, God grows our character, strengthens our faith, and prepares us for what’s ahead.

Reflection

  • Are you in a season of waiting?

  • What might God be forming in you during this time?

  • How can you lean into His presence rather than rush the process?

Waiting is rarely comfortable, but it’s often essential for our growth. Don’t waste the wait, let it grow you.
